Chihiros new hair-tie, what does it do?

Zeniba hands Chihiro a new hair-tye and says "this will protect you"...what does it ultimately protect her from? Does it protect her in her future endeavors? Also, there are two times at the end of the movie that the hair-tye catches a glimpse of light and shines -- once right before she enters the tunnel and second while taking one last look back into the tunnel. Knowing it has special properties, what's the significance/function of this spell-bound hair-tye?

I think the purpose of the hair tie was to make sure that Chihiro doesn't forget about the other world... I might be wrong though

I’m very sure the hair tie was the thing that actually showed her that none of the pigs were her parents

if she exit the tunnel, she would not remember what had happened in the spirit world but only like a presents of a dream that she if does not know and chosen to forget then she will have no memories of what had happened, which is why she looks back at the tunnel seemingly confused at the end, the hairband is probably to assure her that everything had happened wasn't a dream,
